Ontario Heat Pump Rebates 2026: Home Renovation Savings + Greener Homes Loan Explained

The Home Renovation Savings Program replaced Enbridge HER+ in January 2025 and now offers up to $7,500 for an air-source heat pump. Stack it with the $40,000 interest-free Greener Homes Loan, but the registration deadline is May 31, 2026.

The rebate landscape in Ontario shifted significantly in January 2025. Enbridge HER+ ended. The new Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS) replaced it, jointly delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy, and the rules are simpler and the rebates are bigger. Most Halton homeowners who installed a heat pump in 2024 missed money they could have claimed under the new program if they'd waited.

Here's exactly what's available in 2026 and how to stack it.

Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS) — Your Main 2026 Rebate

The Home Renovation Savings Program is the dominant residential HVAC rebate in Ontario for 2026. It launched January 28, 2025 and runs through May 31, 2026 for registration. Key facts:

Real-World 2026 Stacking Example

A typical Halton homeowner doing a hybrid heat pump + new 96%+ furnace upgrade in 2026:

For most Halton homes, energy savings offset 50–80% of the monthly loan payment.

When You Still Need An Energy Advisor Audit

The HRS Program no longer requires the audit. But the Greener Homes Loan still does. So:

Don't Forget The Heat Pump Water Heater Rebate

Most Halton homeowners overlook this one. A heat pump water heater (Rheem ProTerra, A.O. Smith Voltex) replacing an electric or gas tank gets a $1,000 HRS rebate plus may be eligible for Greener Homes Loan financing. Installed cost is typically $4,500–$6,500, so the rebate is meaningful. Compare with tankless in our cost guide.

FAQ

Ontario Heat Pump Rebate Questions

What replaced Enbridge HER+ in Ontario?

The Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS), launched January 28, 2025, replaced the HER+ program. It's jointly delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy and covers electric heat pumps, gas furnaces, insulation, smart thermostats, heat pump water heaters, and more. No pre-retrofit energy audit is required, which is the biggest simplification from the old HER+ rules.

How much can I get for a heat pump under the HRS Program?

Up to $7,500 for an air-source cold-climate heat pump that replaces electric or fossil-fuel heating, $1,250 per ton for non-gas-heated homes, $500 per ton for gas-heated homes, and up to $12,000 for a ground-source heat pump. The exact amount depends on system type, capacity and whether you're replacing gas or electric resistance heat.

Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant still available?

No, the Grant program closed for new applicants in early 2024. The interest-free Loan program (up to $40,000, 10-year repayment) remains active and is still the most valuable financing program for heat pump and major retrofit work.

What's the deadline to apply for HRS?

Registration for the Home Renovation Savings Program closes May 31, 2026. You must register before the deadline; the actual install and rebate claim can happen after registration. We strongly recommend registering as soon as you're considering a heat pump or furnace upgrade.

Can IKAD handle the paperwork?

Yes, we are a participating contractor on the Home Renovation Savings Program. We register your project, file invoices in the format the program needs, and walk you through the rebate claim. We do this every week.
