Ductless mini-splits have gone from niche to mainstream in Halton, and for good reason: they heat and cool, they are efficient, and they solve problems central systems cannot. But they are not the right answer for every home. Here is what they cost in 2026, and when ductless actually makes sense.
What a Ductless Mini-Split Is
A ductless (or mini-split) system is a heat pump with an outdoor unit connected by a small line set to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads, no ductwork required. Each head is its own zone with its own temperature. Because it is a heat pump, it both heats and cools, replacing a window AC and a space heater in one quiet, efficient unit.
2026 Ductless Cost in Halton
| System | Installed Price (2026) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Single-zone (1 head) | $4,500 – $7,500 | One room, addition, garage, hot room |
| Two-zone | $8,000 – $12,000 | Upstairs bedrooms, or main floor + basement |
| Three to four-zone | $12,000 – $18,000 | Whole heritage home without ducts |
Cold-climate units qualify for the same heat pump rebates as ducted systems, which can take a large bite out of these numbers.
Where Ductless Wins
- No ductwork: heritage homes in Old Oakville, downtown Burlington and Hamilton with radiators and no ducts. Ductless avoids tearing into plaster walls.
- Additions and bonus rooms: above-garage rooms, sunrooms and additions that the main system never reached.
- One stubborn room: a bedroom that is always too hot or too cold. Sometimes the fix is air balancing, but when it is not, a single head solves it.
- Efficiency upgrade: as a cold-climate heat pump, it cuts heating cost and replaces window units.
When Ductless Is Not the Answer
If your home already has good ductwork, a ducted cold-climate heat pump usually delivers better value and a cleaner look than multiple wall heads. And a single mini-split will not heat a whole house evenly, multi-zone or a ducted system is the right call for whole-home comfort.
Cold-Climate Performance
The only mini-splits worth installing in Ontario are true cold-climate models. We install Fujitsu Airstage and Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat units that hold efficient output down to about -25 degrees. Sizing still matters, an oversized head short-cycles and an undersized one struggles, so we run the numbers before quoting.
