Ductless mini-splits have gone from niche to mainstream in Halton, and for good reason: they heat and cool, they are efficient, and they solve problems central systems cannot. But they are not the right answer for every home. Here is what they cost in 2026, and when ductless actually makes sense.

What a Ductless Mini-Split Is

A ductless (or mini-split) system is a heat pump with an outdoor unit connected by a small line set to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads, no ductwork required. Each head is its own zone with its own temperature. Because it is a heat pump, it both heats and cools, replacing a window AC and a space heater in one quiet, efficient unit.

2026 Ductless Cost in Halton

SystemInstalled Price (2026)Typical Use
Single-zone (1 head)$4,500 – $7,500One room, addition, garage, hot room
Two-zone$8,000 – $12,000Upstairs bedrooms, or main floor + basement
Three to four-zone$12,000 – $18,000Whole heritage home without ducts

Cold-climate units qualify for the same heat pump rebates as ducted systems, which can take a large bite out of these numbers.

Where Ductless Wins

When Ductless Is Not the Answer

If your home already has good ductwork, a ducted cold-climate heat pump usually delivers better value and a cleaner look than multiple wall heads. And a single mini-split will not heat a whole house evenly, multi-zone or a ducted system is the right call for whole-home comfort.

Cold-Climate Performance

The only mini-splits worth installing in Ontario are true cold-climate models. We install Fujitsu Airstage and Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat units that hold efficient output down to about -25 degrees. Sizing still matters, an oversized head short-cycles and an undersized one struggles, so we run the numbers before quoting.

FAQ

Ductless Mini-Split Questions

How much does a ductless mini-split cost in Halton?

A single-zone system (one outdoor unit, one indoor head) is typically $4,500 to $7,500 installed. Multi-zone systems with two to four heads run $9,000 to $18,000 depending on capacity and how far the line sets have to travel. Cold-climate models cost more but are the only ones worth installing here.

Do ductless mini-splits work in cold Ontario winters?

Cold-climate models (Fujitsu Airstage, Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat) work efficiently down to about -25 degrees, which covers the great majority of Halton winter hours. They both heat and cool, so one system covers all year. On the very coldest nights a backup heat source helps.

Where does a ductless system make the most sense?

Homes without ductwork (heritage Old Oakville and downtown Hamilton), additions and above-garage rooms, and single stubborn hot-or-cold rooms a central system cannot balance. If you already have good ducts, a ducted heat pump is usually the better value.
